The Northern Cardinal is a species of passerine bird in the Cardinalidae family. It owes its name to the red color of the male's plumage which recalls the red clothing of cardinals.
The female is brown tinged with gray and olive, with a faint reddish tint to the wings, crest and tail feathers.
